Springer in Germany Axel Springer Verlag, Germany's biggest newspaper publishing house, was established in 1946 with the launch of a magazine named Nordwestdeutsche Hefte.Axel, son of Hinrich Springer, started it after his father's newspaper business was closed in 1941 by the Nazi government. In the following years, Springer (the company) launched and acquired a series of papers. It started the Hamburger Abendblatt - a daily newspaper in 1948 and Bild Zeitung - a national tabloid in 1952... Springer's International Strategy In the late 1980s, Axel Springer started converting itself from a German publisher to an internationalmedia company. Initially it concentrated on the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In 1988, it entered Hungary through a joint venture with the local magazine publishing house, Budapest GmbH and the local newspaper publishing company, UngarnGmbH. During the same year, it bought the Spanishmagazine publisher Sarpe. While it entered the Hungarian and Spanish market by acquiring local publishers, it started its operations in France and Great Britain by launching its existing popular magazine, the Auto Bild... Further Diversification Springer had not limited its operations to printing alone, and it was consistently diversifying to other related activities. It had already entered the electronic media in Germany through joint venture with local Internet providers. In 2004, the company in agreement with other Internet companies tried to make its presence felt worldwide.
